New and young workers are particularly at risk of injury in the workplace and there are several reasons for this:
• They may lack the experience and training to recognize and avoid hazards.
• They may not know their rights.
• They may not be properly supervised.
• They may not have received adequate orientation.
Employers are required to ensure all workers complete an occupational health and safety awareness training program. As a new or young worker you have rights protecting you against workplace health and safety hazards, and to ensure that you are treated fairly. Employers and supervisors have duties under the law to protect you. This training introduces the new or young worker to the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The training focuses on health and safety, rights and responsibilities of workers, supervisors and employers. It also serves as a general introduction to workplace health and safety.
